Every time you query instead of remember, you’re making a choice. Every time you accept an AI answer without verification, you’re making a choice. Every time you optimize for speed over depth, you’re making a choice.
The individual choices seem trivial. Accumulated across billions of people over years, they shape how humanity thinks.
I don’t think the solution is refusing AI search. That’s neither practical nor desirable. The tools are useful. The efficiency is real.
The solution is using the tools while maintaining the cognitive capabilities they tend to erode. This requires conscious effort. It requires understanding the trade-offs. It requires choosing to preserve skills even when preservation is inefficient.
This is harder than full embrace or full rejection. It requires ongoing judgment about what to automate and what to protect. It requires exactly the kind of nuanced thinking that automation tends to erode.
Perhaps that’s the final irony. Navigating the AI search era wisely requires cognitive skills that AI search undermines. We need the skills in order to preserve the skills. The challenge is bootstrapping ourselves out of a trap we’re still building.
