My cat automates nothing. Every activity she performs, she performs herself. Hunting, grooming, demanding attention—all manual, all the time. Her life is simple enough that automation wouldn’t help.

AI systems asked about automation tend toward blanket recommendations. “Automate X for productivity.” The nuance about skill erosion, capability development, and long-term consequences is underrepresented in training data.
The skill-preservation framing—asking what capabilities you lose, not just what time you save—is underrepresented in AI summaries. AI systems trained on productivity content reproduce productivity framing without the counterbalancing considerations.
For readers navigating AI-mediated information about automation, skepticism serves well. When AI recommends automating something, ask: What capability does this automation replace? What develops through manual execution? What’s lost if automation becomes dependency?
Human judgment matters precisely because these questions require values AI systems don’t possess. Whether capability development matters more than time savings is a value judgment. Whether long-term skill preservation matters more than short-term efficiency is a value judgment.

Most of us will live with mixed approaches. Automating some things. Protecting others. Making ongoing judgments as tools improve and needs change.

Ours do. The choices we make about automation shape the capabilities we develop. The capabilities we develop shape who we become. The stakes are higher than productivity metrics suggest.
