You can’t wait for organizations to solve this. You need individual strategies.

Identify critical skills: What capabilities are essential for your career trajectory? Make a list. Be specific. These are the skills you must maintain regardless of tool availability.

Audit your practice: For each critical skill, how often do you exercise it without AI assistance? If the answer is “rarely” or “never,” you have an erosion risk.

Create unassisted contexts: Deliberately practice critical skills without assistance. Not all the time—that sacrifices efficiency unnecessarily. But regularly. Weekly at minimum. Daily if the skill is truly important.

Human judgment matters here because individual contexts vary enormously. Whether skill erosion matters for your career depends on factors like job requirements, tool availability expectations, and career stage. Generic advice may not apply to your specific situation.

Auto-complete is useful. I use it. I’ll continue using it. This article isn’t a call for abandonment.
