The Power Went Out

Last Tuesday, the power went out for six hours. Not a major disaster. Just an inconvenience. Except I discovered I couldn’t do anything.

I couldn’t work because my computer needs electricity. Obviously. But also because my phone died and I couldn’t tether. My backup battery was depleted from a previous use I’d forgotten to charge after. The local coffee shop was also without power.

More revealing: I couldn’t figure out what to do instead. The skills for non-electric activity had atrophied. I wandered around my apartment like someone who’d forgotten how rooms work.

My British lilac cat, Luna, was unfazed. She slept through the outage. Her activities—napping, stretching, staring judgmentally—require no electricity. She has no technology dependencies. Her skills are fully intact.

The outage exposed mostly medium-stakes dependencies. My navigation skills have degraded. My time awareness without devices is poor. My ability to function without constant connectivity is limited.

But high-stakes dependencies exist too. What if my banking app failed and I needed to handle finances manually? What if electronic medical records became unavailable during a health emergency? What if communication infrastructure failed during a crisis?

The Automation Complacency Connection

Aviation researchers have studied automation complacency extensively. Pilots who rely heavily on autopilot lose manual flying skills and situational awareness. When automation fails, they’re slower to notice and less capable of responding.

The pattern applies to invisible technology generally. When systems work automatically, humans disengage. Disengagement reduces skill and awareness. Reduced skill and awareness make failure more dangerous.

This isn’t laziness. It’s rational adaptation. Why monitor something that works? Why maintain skills you don’t need? The investment seems wasteful when automation handles everything.

But rationality assumes stable conditions. The investment that seems wasteful becomes critical when conditions change. The skills that seem unnecessary become essential when automation fails.

Invisible technology encourages maximum complacency because it requires minimum attention. The better it works, the less you engage. The less you engage, the more vulnerable you become.

What Actually Gets Lost

Let me be specific about the capabilities that invisible technology erodes.

Spatial reasoning and navigation. Before GPS, people built mental maps of their environments. They understood spatial relationships. They could give and follow directions. They developed intuition about geography.

GPS users often can’t navigate without assistance. They don’t know their own neighborhoods. They can’t estimate distances or travel times. The spatial reasoning that used to develop naturally through experience never develops at all.

Instant search access changes cognitive strategy. Why remember when you can look up? Why reason when you can query? The skills of memory and reasoning aren’t exercised because search is faster.

Manual task execution. Countless manual tasks now have automated alternatives. Spelling, calculating, scheduling, organizing, navigating—each automation represents a skill that used to require practice.

The aggregate effect is significant. Each individual skill loss seems minor. Collectively, they represent substantial capability degradation. The invisible technology handles so much that human competence contracts to the space technology doesn’t cover.

The “Until It’s Gone” Revelation

Invisible technology reveals its importance through absence. You don’t value what you don’t notice until you notice it’s missing.

The outage forced confrontation with my dependencies. Not intellectually—I knew abstractly that I depend on electricity. Experientially. I felt the dependency in my inability to function.

Building Resilience

I’ve started deliberately making invisible technology visible. Here’s the approach.

Periodic disconnection. Regular intervals without connected technology. Not as punishment—as diagnostic. What becomes difficult? What skills are needed that I don’t have? Where is my vulnerability?

Manual fallback practice. Occasionally navigating without GPS. Calculating without calculators. Writing without spell check. Organizing without apps. Not constantly—just often enough to maintain basic capability.

Dependency awareness. Maintaining consciousness of what technology does for me. Resisting the pull toward complete invisibility. Knowing what I depend on even when I don’t need to think about it.

This isn’t about rejecting technology. I use invisible technology extensively. The goal is ensuring that invisibility doesn’t become blindness. That convenience doesn’t become incapacity. That the “until it’s gone” moment doesn’t come as a complete surprise.

I’m not suggesting we should all become cats. Human civilization depends on technology, and that’s mostly good. Technology enables things no amount of personal skill could accomplish.

But there’s something to learn from Luna’s self-sufficiency. The independence that comes from having capabilities, not just access. The security that comes from being able to function without external systems.

The best technology might be the one you don’t notice. But the best person might be one who could notice, who maintains awareness of dependencies, who keeps backup capabilities warm, who isn’t surprised when the invisible becomes absent.

Here’s what I keep returning to after the outage.

Invisible technology is a design achievement. Making complex systems so reliable and intuitive that they disappear from consciousness is genuinely impressive. It represents enormous engineering effort and deep understanding of human needs.

Know what you depend on. Practice skills you rarely need. Test backups before you need them. Stay conscious of the invisible even when consciousness seems unnecessary.

The best technology is the one you don’t notice. But the best relationship with technology includes noticing even when you don’t have to. Includes maintaining capabilities even when automation makes them seem obsolete. Includes preparing for absence even when presence seems permanent.

Because it’s not permanent. Nothing is. And when the invisible goes, you want to be ready—not surprised, not helpless, not revealing for the first time just how much you’d forgotten you’d lost.

Luna is napping again. The power is back on. Everything is invisible again, working seamlessly, disappearing from consciousness.

I’m trying to notice anyway. It’s harder than it sounds. But it’s worth it. Because next time the invisible goes, I’d like to be more like Luna—capable, independent, unfazed—and less like the person I was last Tuesday, wandering confused through a suddenly visible dependency I’d forgotten existed.
