It’s a claim that launched a thousand LinkedIn posts, a hundred hiring philosophies, and at least one insufferable coworker you’ve probably met.
The original research comes from a 1968 study by Sackman, Erikson, and Grant. They measured how long programmers took to complete debugging and coding tasks, and found performance differences of roughly 10:1 between the best and worst performers. The study had nine participants. Nine. Not nine hundred. Not nine thousand. Nine people, working on tasks that bear almost no resemblance to modern software development, using hardware that had less processing power than your coffee maker.
But the number was irresistible. It was clean, dramatic, and flattering to anyone who suspected they were the smart one in the room. So it spread. It became gospel. It was repeated by Fred Brooks, amplified by Steve McConnell, and eventually calcified into an industry axiom that nobody questions because everyone assumes somebody else already verified it.
They didn’t. Or rather, the people who did verify it found something much more nuanced than “some programmers are magic.” The measured differences were between the best and worst performers, not between good and average. They varied wildly depending on the task. And they said nothing—absolutely nothing—about what happens when those programmers work on teams, maintain codebases over years, or need to communicate what they built to other humans.
But nuance doesn’t fit on a slide deck. So the myth persisted.
What the Research Actually Shows
Let’s be precise about what we know, because precision matters here more than most places.
The original Sackman study measured individual task completion time. Later studies by Curtis (1981), DeMarco and Lister (1985), and others found similar variation in individual performance. This is like measuring a soccer player’s value solely by how fast they can sprint. Speed matters. But if they never pass the ball, ignore the formation, and alienate the rest of the squad, their sprint speed is worse than irrelevant. It’s actively destructive.
The more recent research tells a different story. A 2019 study from Microsoft Research found that the highest-performing developers weren’t necessarily the fastest coders. One data point stood out. On a team of eight, removing the most “productive” developer (by raw output) for two weeks resulted in a 15% increase in team velocity. A developer who works in bursts might produce the same total volume—but in lumps. Large, complex changesets that take days to review. Architectural leaps that require meetings to explain. Periods of silence followed by avalanches of code. The total output might be identical, but the usable output—the code that actually ships, gets reviewed, integrates cleanly, and doesn’t require rework—is dramatically different.
Consistency also compounds socially. The developer who is reliably present, reliably responsive, and reliably producing becomes the person others build around. They become the heartbeat of the team. Not the star. The heartbeat. And when the heartbeat stops, everyone notices immediately. When the star burns out, people are often relieved.
This isn’t a feel-good observation. It’s a structural one. Software development is a team sport played over years. The winning strategy isn’t to have the best player. It’s to have the most reliable system. And reliable systems are built from reliable components.

This inverts the 10x developer equation entirely. The developer who writes code slowly but clearly isn’t slower. They’re faster—measured over the lifetime of the code. The developer who writes code quickly but obscurely isn’t faster. They’re generating debt that someone else will pay, with interest.

The tech industry loves its mythologies. The college dropout who builds a billion-dollar company. The lone genius who codes through the night and produces something revolutionary. The 10x developer who carries the team on their back while everyone else watches in awe.
These stories exist because they’re dramatic. Drama makes for good movies and good blog posts and good recruiting pitches. But they’re survivorship bias in narrative form. For every Steve Wozniak soldering boards in a garage, there are ten thousand anonymous engineers who built the infrastructure those boards ran on. For every “genius” developer who shipped a product solo, there are a hundred teams who shipped something better, together, with nobody’s name on it.
The Hollywood version of software development has done measurable harm to the industry. It’s created hiring practices that optimize for puzzle-solving speed over collaboration skills. It’s created promotion criteria that reward individual heroism over team contribution. It’s created a culture where “I don’t need help” is treated as a strength rather than a warning sign.
The reality of high-performing software development is profoundly boring. It’s daily standups where people actually listen. It’s code reviews where feedback is specific and kind. It’s retrospectives where problems are named honestly. It’s developers who write tests not because they’re told to but because they understand that tests are a gift to their future selves and their colleagues.
It’s showing up. Every day. Doing the work. Not the dramatic work. The boring, essential, compounding work that makes everything else possible.
The Cultural Cost
There’s a damage that the 10x myth inflicts that rarely gets discussed: the damage to people who are told, implicitly or explicitly, that they’re not the genius.
If you believe that 10x developers exist, you must also believe that 1x developers exist. And 0.1x developers. The framework demands a hierarchy, and hierarchies demand a bottom. Developers who buy into the myth and conclude they’re not the special ones often respond in one of two ways: they burn out trying to become something they’re not, or they disengage entirely, assuming their contributions don’t matter compared to the anointed genius.

We ignore it because hustle culture has better marketing than math.
