Most modern developers can’t do this.

The Understanding vs Usage Gap

There’s crucial distinction between understanding something and using something. Understanding means knowing how it works internally, why design choices were made, what tradeoffs exist. Using means calling the API successfully. Modern programming education increasingly teaches usage without understanding.

This is library-enabled competence gap. You can use sort function without understanding sorting algorithms. You can use hash map without understanding hashing and collision resolution. You can use async primitives without understanding concurrency models. Usage is easy. Understanding is hard. Libraries made usage sufficient. Understanding became unnecessary.

Pre-library programming required understanding. No libraries to use. You implemented everything. Implementation forced understanding. Library culture created copy-paste programming. Need functionality? Search Stack Overflow. Copy code. Paste into project. Adjust until it works. Move on. Never understand what you copied. Never understand why it works. Just copy and pray.
