The Front Page You Never Assembled
There was a ritual that most literate adults practiced for decades, so quietly and so habitually that it barely registered as a skill. Every morning — over coffee, on the commute, during breakfast — you assembled your own news diet. You chose which newspaper to read, or which two or three. You scanned the front page and decided which stories to follow. You flipped to the opinion section and deliberately selected columnists you disagreed with, or avoided them, or alternated. You supplemented your primary source with radio, television, or conversation. And through this daily curation, you developed something that had no formal name but enormous practical importance: editorial judgment.
Editorial judgment is the ability to select, prioritize, and evaluate information sources. It’s knowing that a story from Reuters carries different epistemic weight than a story from a partisan blog. It’s understanding that the placement of a story — front page versus page twelve — signals editorial assessment of its importance. It’s recognising when a headline is designed to inform versus when it’s designed to provoke. And it’s maintaining a mental model of your own information diet: knowing that you tend toward certain perspectives and deliberately compensating.
This skill is dying. Not because people have become less intelligent, but because the environment that sustained it has been systematically replaced by one that doesn’t require it. The replacement is the algorithmic news feed — a system that observes what you click, infers what you want, and serves you more of it, forever, without ever asking you to make a curatorial decision.
Google Discover. Apple News. Facebook’s News Feed. Twitter’s (now X’s) algorithmic timeline. Reddit’s recommendation engine. Flipboard. SmartNews. Microsoft Start. The specific platforms vary, but the architecture is identical: an algorithm stands between you and the world’s information, making thousands of editorial decisions per day on your behalf, optimising for engagement rather than understanding.
The pitch is personalization. The reality is dependency. And the cost — measured in lost critical thinking capacity, degraded source evaluation skills, and narrowed intellectual horizons — is only now becoming visible at scale.
I’ve been writing about automation-driven skill loss for over a year now, and this one might be the most consequential entry in the series. Navigation skills matter. Phone etiquette matters. But the ability to independently evaluate information and construct a balanced view of reality? That’s foundational to democratic citizenship. And we’ve outsourced it to an engagement-maximisation algorithm.
What Editorial Judgment Actually Involves
Before we can assess what’s been lost, we need to understand what editorial judgment consists of. It’s not a single skill but a cluster of related competencies, most of which were developed through the daily practice of choosing what to read.
Source selection. The first act of editorial judgment is choosing where to get your information. This requires knowing that different sources have different orientations, strengths, and weaknesses. The Financial Times covers economics differently than The Guardian. CNN and Fox News have different editorial priorities. Al Jazeera offers perspectives on the Middle East that Western outlets frequently miss. Knowing this landscape — maintaining a working map of the media ecosystem — is itself a form of expertise.
In the pre-algorithmic era, source selection was active and deliberate. You subscribed to specific newspapers. You bookmarked specific websites. You tuned to specific channels. These choices reflected conscious decisions about what perspectives you wanted in your information diet, and they required periodic reassessment. Am I getting enough international coverage? Am I too reliant on a single outlet? Do I need a conservative counterpoint to balance my liberal-leaning primary source?
Algorithmic feeds eliminate source selection entirely. The algorithm doesn’t care where a story comes from — it cares whether you’ll click on it. A deeply reported investigation from the Associated Press and a provocative hot take from a Substack newsletter appear side by side, undifferentiated, evaluated solely by the algorithm’s prediction of your engagement probability. The concept of “my sources” — a curated, deliberate collection of information providers — dissolves into “my feed,” an algorithmically generated stream with no fixed composition and no editorial coherence.
Importance assessment. Editors make judgment calls about what matters. The decision to put a story on the front page — above the fold, in newspaper terminology — is an assertion of significance. It says: this is what we believe deserves your attention today. You might disagree with that assessment, and disagreeing is itself an exercise of editorial judgment. But the assessment exists, made by professionals who’ve spent careers developing their sense of what constitutes news.
Algorithmic feeds replace importance with relevance — or more precisely, with predicted engagement. A story about a geopolitical crisis and a story about a celebrity’s outfit are evaluated by the same metric: will this user click? If the algorithm has learned that you click on celebrity content more than geopolitics, the celebrity story will rank higher. This isn’t a failure of the algorithm. It’s doing exactly what it was designed to do. But it means the feed has no concept of civic importance, no sense of “you need to know this even if you’d rather not,” no editorial backbone.
Credibility evaluation. Perhaps the most important component of editorial judgment is the ability to assess whether a piece of information is trustworthy. This involves evaluating the source (is this outlet known for accuracy?), the evidence (are claims supported by data, documents, or named sources?), the framing (is the story presented neutrally or with a persuasive slant?), and the context (does this story align with or contradict what I know from other sources?).
These evaluation skills develop through practice — specifically, through repeated exposure to a variety of sources of varying quality. When you read a range of outlets, you develop calibration. You learn to notice when a story seems too good (or too outrageous) to be true. You learn the hallmarks of reliable reporting: multiple sources, specific details, transparent methodology, willingness to present counterarguments.
Algorithmic feeds undermine this calibration by homogenising the presentation of content. Every story in your Google Discover feed looks the same: a headline, a thumbnail, a source name in small grey text. The visual hierarchy that newspapers used to signal credibility — broadsheet versus tabloid, front page versus back page, staff reporter versus wire service — is flattened. A story from the BBC and a story from a content farm designed to generate ad revenue appear in the same format, with the same visual weight, distinguished only by a small source label that most users don’t consciously process.
How We Evaluated the Decline
Method
Measuring editorial judgment is inherently difficult because the skill is exercised implicitly, in the privacy of individual information consumption. People don’t track their source diversity or log their credibility assessments. So we combined multiple approaches to build a composite picture.
Media diet audit. We recruited 620 participants across three age cohorts (18–30, 31–50, 51–70) and asked them to install a browser extension that tracked their news consumption for 30 days. The extension logged the domain, time spent, and referral source (direct visit, search engine, social media, or algorithmic feed) for each news article accessed. This gave us objective data on source diversity and feed dependency.
Editorial judgment assessment. We designed a 30-item test measuring four competencies: source identification (recognising outlets and their orientations), importance ranking (ordering stories by civic significance versus engagement appeal), credibility evaluation (identifying methodological red flags in news articles), and perspective diversity (recognising when a set of sources represents a narrow viewpoint). The test used real articles from the previous six months, lightly anonymised to prevent recognition bias.
Historical comparison. We compared our results with data from the Pew Research Center’s longitudinal media consumption studies (2004–2027) and the Reuters Institute’s Digital News Report (2012–2027), focusing on metrics related to source diversity, active versus passive news selection, and trust calibration.
Feed dependency scoring. We developed a composite metric we called “Feed Dependency Score” (FDS) ranging from 0 (entirely self-directed information consumption) to 100 (entirely algorithm-directed). This incorporated the proportion of news accessed via algorithmic feeds, the frequency of direct visits to specific outlets, and self-reported confidence in independent source selection.

What the Numbers Showed
The media diet audit produced the most striking finding: participants in the 18–30 cohort accessed an average of 2.3 distinct news sources over 30 days. The 31–50 cohort accessed 4.1. The 51–70 cohort accessed 6.8. This isn’t a subtle generational difference — the oldest cohort consumed news from three times as many sources as the youngest.
More importantly, the referral data revealed why. Among 18–30-year-olds, 81% of news articles were accessed via algorithmic feeds (social media, Google Discover, Apple News, app recommendations). Only 9% came from direct visits to news websites — meaning only 9% reflected a deliberate choice to consult a specific source. The remaining 10% came from search engines, which occupy an ambiguous middle ground (you chose to search, but the algorithm chose what to show you).
Among 51–70-year-olds, the pattern was inverted: 34% of articles came from algorithmic feeds, while 47% came from direct visits. This cohort had built information habits in the pre-algorithmic era and largely maintained them, supplementing direct sources with algorithmic feeds rather than relying on them exclusively.
The editorial judgment assessment scores correlated strongly with feed dependency. High-FDS participants (scores above 70, indicating heavy reliance on algorithmic feeds) scored an average of 12.4 out of 30 on the editorial judgment test. Low-FDS participants (scores below 30) averaged 22.7. The gap was largest in credibility evaluation, where high-FDS participants struggled to identify methodological red flags in news articles — missing unsupported claims, anonymous sourcing, and conflicts of interest at nearly three times the rate of low-FDS participants.
The Reuters Institute data provided historical context. In 2015, 36% of survey respondents said they accessed news primarily through social media or aggregator apps. By 2027, that figure was 64% globally and 78% among under-30s. Over the same period, the proportion of people who said they actively chose specific news sources declined from 58% to 31%.
The Engagement Trap
To understand why algorithmic feeds are so damaging to editorial judgment, you need to understand what they optimise for. The answer, in every case, is engagement. Not understanding. Not accuracy. Not civic importance. Engagement — defined as clicks, time spent, shares, and return visits.
This optimisation target creates a systematic bias toward content that provokes strong emotional reactions. Outrage, fear, surprise, and moral indignation all drive engagement more effectively than nuanced analysis or dispassionate reporting. The algorithm doesn’t prefer misinformation over truth — it’s agnostic on that axis. But it does prefer engaging content over boring content, and the truth is often boring. The complex reality of a trade dispute is less clickable than a headline about economic collapse. The nuanced finding of a scientific study is less shareable than a sensationalised interpretation.
Over time, this shapes not just what you read but how you think. When your information diet is curated for emotional engagement, you develop a skewed sense of what’s happening in the world. Events seem more extreme, more threatening, more outrageous than they actually are. This is the well-documented phenomenon of “mean world syndrome,” updated for the algorithmic era: the feed doesn’t just show you a biased sample of reality — it shows you the most emotionally intense version of every story, because intensity drives clicks.
A person with strong editorial judgment can resist this distortion. They recognise when a headline is designed to provoke rather than inform. They check the source. They seek a calmer, more analytical treatment of the same story. But developing this resistance requires practice — years of comparing sensational coverage with measured coverage, of learning to distinguish genuine alarm from manufactured outrage. And that practice becomes impossible when the algorithm controls everything you see.
The Filter Bubble Is Real, and It’s Worse Than You Think
The concept of the “filter bubble” — coined by Eli Pariser in 2011 — has been debated extensively in media studies. Some researchers argue that algorithmic personalisation doesn’t significantly narrow information exposure, citing evidence that people encounter diverse viewpoints even within curated feeds. Others argue the effect is real but modest.
I think both camps are looking at the wrong metric. The question isn’t whether algorithmic feeds occasionally show you content from outside your usual perspective. They do — sometimes deliberately, as platforms experiment with “diverse viewpoint” features. The question is whether users have the skills to engage meaningfully with that content when they encounter it.
And here’s where the real damage becomes visible. When editorial judgment atrophies, encountering a perspective you disagree with doesn’t produce critical engagement — it produces dismissal or outrage. You haven’t practiced evaluating unfamiliar perspectives. You haven’t developed the skill of reading charitably, of steelmanning an opposing argument, of distinguishing “I disagree with this” from “this is wrong.” The algorithm has trained you to consume information that confirms your existing views, and when something breaks through that pattern, you lack the cognitive tools to do anything productive with it.
This is the filter bubble’s true cost: not that you never see the other side, but that you’ve lost the ability to process it when you do.
The Death of the News Routine
Before algorithmic feeds, most people had a news routine. The specific routine varied — morning newspaper, evening broadcast, weekend magazine — but the structure was consistent: a regular, scheduled engagement with a curated information source, produced by professionals who’d made deliberate decisions about what to include and what to omit.
The news routine served several functions beyond mere information delivery. It created temporal boundaries around news consumption. You read the morning paper, then you stopped. You watched the evening news, then you turned off the television. Information consumption had a natural beginning and end, which prevented the kind of ambient, continuous, anxiety-producing news exposure that characterises the algorithmic feed experience.
The routine also provided a shared reference point. When most people in a community read the same newspaper or watched the same evening news, they shared a common informational baseline. You could reference “that story in today’s paper” and expect your colleague to know what you meant. This shared baseline facilitated conversation, debate, and collective sense-making. It wasn’t perfect — it privileged mainstream perspectives and could enforce conformity — but it provided a common reality on which disagreements could be productively grounded.
Algorithmic feeds destroyed both functions. There are no temporal boundaries in an infinite scroll. There is no shared baseline when everyone’s feed is different. The result is a paradox: we have more access to information than any generation in history, and less ability to make sense of it collectively.
My British lilac cat, who consumes no news whatsoever and is therefore immune to all of this, somehow manages to maintain a perfectly balanced worldview. There may be a lesson there, though I suspect it’s just that her world is very small.
The Credibility Collapse
One of the most alarming consequences of algorithmic news consumption is the erosion of credibility discrimination — the ability to distinguish reliable information from unreliable information.
In the pre-algorithmic era, credibility assessment was partly structural. If a story appeared in The New York Times, you knew it had passed through multiple layers of editorial review. If it appeared in a tabloid, you calibrated your trust accordingly. If it appeared on an unmoderated forum, you treated it as rumour until confirmed. The source hierarchy was imperfect and sometimes unfair, but it provided a functional heuristic for information quality.
Algorithmic feeds demolished this hierarchy. In your Google Discover feed, a story from the Associated Press and a story from a content mill appear in visually identical cards. The source name is present but de-emphasized — a small label beneath the headline, easily overlooked. The algorithm’s ranking doesn’t reflect source credibility; it reflects engagement prediction. A well-researched Reuters investigation and a misleading clickbait article can occupy adjacent positions in your feed, and the clickbait might rank higher if the algorithm predicts you’ll click on it.
Over time, this flattening corrodes your sense of source hierarchy. When everything looks the same and is ranked by the same engagement metric, the implicit message is that everything is equivalent. The distinction between a journalist who spent three months investigating a story and a content creator who spent three minutes rewriting a press release becomes invisible — not because the distinction doesn’t exist, but because the presentation erases it.

The data from our editorial judgment assessment confirmed this. When we showed participants a set of articles and asked them to rank them by reliability, high-FDS participants performed barely above chance. They couldn’t consistently distinguish between a sourced, fact-checked report and an unsourced opinion piece presented as news. Low-FDS participants, by contrast, correctly identified the more reliable source in 73% of comparisons.
This isn’t about intelligence. Many of the high-FDS participants were well-educated professionals. It’s about practice. Credibility evaluation is a learned skill, and learning it requires encountering a range of source types, actively assessing their quality, and receiving feedback on those assessments. When the algorithm does all the selecting, the learning never happens.
What We Could Do About It
Fixing this problem is harder than fixing most of the skill losses I’ve written about in this series. You can reintroduce phone calls or manual washing machine settings with relatively modest lifestyle adjustments. But restructuring your entire relationship with information consumption — rewiring habits that have been algorithmically reinforced for years — requires sustained, deliberate effort.
Still, it’s not impossible. Here are some approaches that the evidence suggests can help.
Build a source portfolio. Deliberately select five to seven news sources that represent a range of perspectives, formats, and geographic focuses. Bookmark them. Visit them directly, not through a feed. Treat this portfolio the way a financial advisor treats an investment portfolio: diversified, periodically rebalanced, and assessed for quality.
Schedule your news consumption. Restore temporal boundaries. Decide when you’ll consume news — morning, evening, or both — and stick to it. Outside those windows, close the apps, disable the notifications, and resist the scroll. This isn’t about consuming less news; it’s about consuming it deliberately rather than passively.
Practice credibility evaluation. When you read an article, spend thirty seconds assessing it before accepting its claims. Who wrote it? What sources are cited? Is the evidence specific or vague? Does the headline match the content? Are counterarguments acknowledged? These questions become automatic with practice, but they never develop if you’re scrolling through a feed on autopilot.
Use RSS. Really Simple Syndication is a decades-old technology that lets you subscribe to specific sources and receive their content in a chronological, unranked feed. No algorithm. No personalisation. No engagement optimisation. Just the articles, in the order they were published, from the sources you chose. It’s the digital equivalent of a newspaper subscription, and it works beautifully. Tools like Feedly, Inoreader, and NetNewsWire make it accessible even for non-technical users.
Teach media literacy as a core skill. This is the upstream fix. Media literacy — the ability to access, analyse, evaluate, and create media — should be taught as rigorously as mathematics or writing. Some countries (Finland, notably) already do this with impressive results. In Finland, which has among the highest media literacy rates in the world, susceptibility to misinformation is measurably lower than in countries without systematic media education.
The Democratic Stakes
I’ve saved the most important point for last, because I want it to land.
Editorial judgment isn’t just a personal convenience skill, like knowing how to sort laundry or navigate without GPS. It’s a democratic competency. The ability to independently evaluate information, select diverse sources, and form reasoned opinions about public affairs is foundational to self-governance. When citizens can’t do these things — when their understanding of the world is entirely mediated by engagement-optimisation algorithms — democracy itself is compromised.
This isn’t theoretical. We’ve seen the consequences play out in election after election, in pandemic misinformation, in conspiracy movements that thrive in algorithmically curated information ecosystems. The people caught up in these phenomena aren’t stupid. Many are educated, successful, and well-intentioned. But they’ve spent years in algorithmic information environments that never asked them to develop or exercise editorial judgment, and when they encounter sophisticated disinformation, they lack the immune response that editorial judgment provides.
The algorithmic news feed is, in this sense, the most consequential automation in the series. It didn’t just deskill a domestic task or a workplace routine. It deskilled citizenship. And unlike a wrinkled shirt or a missed phone call, the consequences of that deskilling are felt by everyone — including those of us who still subscribe to newspapers, check our sources, and read columnists we disagree with.

A story about municipal bond financing is less engaging than a story about a celebrity scandal, but if the bonds affect every taxpayer in the city, the editor puts it on the front page. That’s editorial judgment in action: prioritizing importance over appeal.
The algorithmic feed asks a different question: “What will this user engage with?” There’s no concept of need, no notion of civic obligation, no editorial backbone. The algorithm serves you exactly what you’re most likely to click on, which is exactly what will keep your existing biases comfortable and your existing blind spots intact. It’s a mirror that shows you what you already are, and calls it personalisation.
We used to have gatekeepers who told us what mattered, and we complained about them constantly. We said they were biased, out of touch, self-important. They were, sometimes. But they also performed a function that no algorithm has replicated: they made editorial decisions based on importance rather than engagement, and in doing so, they forced us to confront information we hadn’t chosen and might not have wanted.
We fired the gatekeepers and replaced them with an algorithm that tells us what we want to hear. And now, a generation later, we’ve lost the ability to find what we need to know on our own. That’s not personalization. That’s intellectual dependency. And the only way out is to start making editorial decisions for ourselves again — deliberately, effortfully, and without waiting for the feed to do it for us.
